Sensors In Automotive Systems
How Sensors are used in Automotive Steering, Brake and Throttle Systems
Have you ever considered how many parts are used to build the average vehicle? An automobile contains many complex systems, such as steering, brake, and throttle systems. Each of these systems, in turn, requires their own set of components that need to be installed correctly so the vehicle can operate as intended. When you add up every single nut, bolt, and screw, that number comes to an estimated 30,000 components! Some of those pieces include position and velocity sensors, which are simple and effective solutions for the automotive industry.
Complex Systems With Simple Components
Linear transducers, or position sensors, are typically used in various automotive applications. To understand how they work, think of them as devices that can determine where an object is located by measuring its position. Their compact size makes them an ideal solution for the manufacture of the following automotive systems:
- Steering – Position sensors are critical pieces in a steering system, as they essentially communicate between the interior steering wheel and the vehicle’s tires. The sensor is installed in the steering column and helps ensure that the driver has control over the system.
- Braking – The ability to slow and stop a vehicle is obviously one of the most important safety features, and it should always function properly. Position sensors help monitor the braking system for various functions, such as disengaging the cruise control and turning on the brake lights.
- Throttle – When a vehicle accelerates, the throttle system is activated to control the amount of air that enters the engine. A position sensor is used to monitor how quickly and how far the throttle valve is opening.
